FAO - Eradicating the pest of small ruminants by 2030

The objectives resulting from this international conference jointly organised by FAO and OIE together with the government of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire was to totally eradicate this disease through a four stages action plan for a period of fifteen years in collaboration with national veterinary institutions. The cost is estimated between EUR 4 and 7 billion.
The first stage would consist in a diagnosis and identification of the infected animals and areas. The second phase will develop a systematic vaccination which will be obligatory at the third stage. The fourth stage will be the assessment of the action conducted.

Jose Graziano da Silva, Director-General of FAO said “We have the plan, the tools, the scientific statements and the partners”, “the eradication of PPR is not only at our doorstep, but it also depends on us; we agreed with OIE to establish a joint secretary which will be hosted by the FAO”.

The pest of small ruminants costs 2 billion of animal losses per year, mainly in Africa, in Asia and in the Middle East. It is due to a virus which develops very quickly, infecting up to 90% of animals in a few days. During the last fifteen years, the PPR has developed in nearly 70 countries around the world.
