Neighbourhood initiative "One village, one product"

The European Commission spokesperson, Maja Kocijancic, described the program as a toolbox to provide the necessary legal, technical and economic resources, as well as the training to women in rural areas in order to promote their emergence into the local economic sphere. “This model is based on shoring up local women's know-how, developing their understanding of economic aspects and fostering partnerships that generate employment" she said.

In the Egyptian governorate of Béni Suef, women became administrators of milk’s production through this cooperation programme. Today they manage the transport of milk to the cooperative and negotiate the price rates depending on the quality. These businesswomen, trained in hygiene and milk processing techniques, have been empowered with news skills.

This project is born from a partnership established between the local cooperative, a local NGO, the Social Development Fund and Danone, and it is funded by the European Union with EUR 50.000 budget to benefit 700 female producers. In Beheira region, in South Cairo, this initiative also allowed farmer women to create their own enterprises on artichoke processing.

These projects have been developed in the framework of the Spring Forward programme, a EUR 8 million programme launched in 2012 by UN Women and the European Union focusing their actions on Libya, Jordan, Tunisia and Egypt.
In the same way, in 2014 the Union for the Mediterranean launched a project called "skills for success - women's employability" in order to strengthen disadvantaged women looking for a job in Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan and Lebanon.
